Its said that whoever stays in his house, thus he will be a martyr even though he did not pass away..
Nabi ﷺ said something to the effect: "No man whom the plague afflicted, thus he remains in his house whilst having patience and hoping for rewards (from Allah Ta'ala), knowing that nothing will afflict him except that which Allah Ta'ala had written for him, for him will be similar to the reward like that of a martyr."
This (hadeeth) includes everyone who practices patience and hopes for rewards, whilst putting trust on Allah Ta'ala whether he passed away due to the plague or not.
Ibn Hajar explained this (in his statement) : The (spoken) words of the hadeeth includes those people who possess the above mentioned qualities, He will attain the reward of the martyr even though he did not pass away.

Below is a video talk regarding THE HISTORY & REALITY OF PLAGUES delivered by Syeikh Yasir Qadhi. May it benefits us all, Ameen.
